History & background

The American Curl began in Lakewood, California, in 1981, when a stray with unusual curled ears produced kittens sharing the trait. The curl comes from a natural dominant gene, and the breed was recognized by major registries within a few years.

Is a American Curl right for you?

American Curls suit families and multi-pet homes wanting an affectionate, adaptable companion. They are gentle and playful with children and other animals and settle easily into apartment life.

Care & health

Coat care is easy—weekly brushing for either short or semi-long coats. Handle the ears very gently and never force or manipulate the curl, as the cartilage can be injured; otherwise clean them carefully and choose breeders who prioritize healthy ear structure.

American Curl FAQ

Are American Curl cats born with curled ears?

No. Kittens are born with straight ears that begin curling within the first week and set into their final shape by around four months.

Is it safe to touch an American Curl's ears?

Handle them gently and never bend or force the curl. The ear cartilage is firm but can be injured by rough handling.

Are American Curls good with children?

Yes. They are sociable, playful, and gentle, generally getting along well with respectful children and other pets.
