🐈 Turkish Van kittens

The Turkish Van is famous as the "swimming cat" for its unusual fondness for water, thanks to a soft, water-resistant coat with no undercoat. Large, energetic, and athletic, it loves to climb high and play hard well into adulthood. The signature "van pattern" leaves the body white with color confined to the head and tail.

History & background

The Turkish Van traces to the rugged Lake Van region of eastern Turkey, where it developed as a natural landrace over many centuries. British travelers brought cats to the West in the mid-20th century, and the breed was later recognized by CFA and TICA. Turkey regards the breed as part of its national heritage.

Is a Turkish Van right for you?

Turkish Vans suit active households that can offer vertical space, vigorous play, and interaction. They bond deeply with their families and enjoy children and other pets, but can be strong-willed and energetic. Owners should not be surprised by water play at the sink or tub.

Care & health

The single, silky coat lacks an undercoat, so weekly brushing usually suffices, with more during seasonal sheds. Provide tall perches, sturdy toys, and outlets for climbing and chasing. Responsible breeders screen for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and provide general health documentation.
