🐕 Chihuahua puppies

The Chihuahua is a tiny, spirited companion with a bold personality and deep loyalty to its owner. It's ideal for apartments and one of the longest-lived breeds, but its fragility makes it better suited to homes with older children or adults.

History & background

The smallest recognized dog breed, the Chihuahua traces to Mexico and the ancient Techichi companion dogs of the Toltec and Aztec peoples. Named for the Mexican state of Chihuahua, it was recognized by the AKC in 1904.

Is a Chihuahua right for you?

Best for apartment dwellers, seniors, and households without young children, since its small size makes it easily injured. It tolerates Florida's warmth well but chills easily in air conditioning — a sweater indoors can help, and it should never be left in a hot car or yard.

Care & health

Grooming is easy — brush smooth coats weekly and long coats a few times a week. Provide short daily walks and play; watch for dental disease, patellar luxation, and a soft spot (molera) on the skull.

Chihuahua FAQ

Are Chihuahuas good with young children?

Usually not. Their tiny size makes them fragile and easily injured, so they're better suited to homes with older, gentle children or adults.

Do Chihuahuas do well in apartments?

Yes. They're one of the best apartment breeds — tiny, adaptable, and needing only short daily walks and indoor play.

How long do Chihuahuas live?

Chihuahuas are among the longest-lived breeds, commonly reaching 14 to 16 years or more with good care.
