History & background

Pomeranians descend from large Spitz sled dogs of the Arctic and take their name from the Pomerania region of Central Europe. Selective breeding, championed by Queen Victoria, shrank them to today's tiny size by the late 1800s.

Is a Pomeranian right for you?

Pomeranians fit apartments and homes where they get daily interaction and gentle handling. Their dense double coat makes Florida heat a real concern, so limit midday activity and always provide cool, shaded, air-conditioned rest.

Care & health

The double coat needs brushing several times a week and periodic professional grooming; never shave it, as it protects against heat and sun. Provide daily play and short walks, and monitor for dental issues, luxating patella, and collapsing trachea.

Pomeranian FAQ

Do Pomeranians shed a lot?

Poms have a thick double coat that sheds moderately year-round with heavier seasonal 'blows,' so expect regular brushing to manage loose hair.

Can Pomeranians handle Florida heat?

Their dense coat traps heat, so Poms need air conditioning, shade, and cooler morning or evening walks to stay safe in Florida summers.

Are Pomeranians good with kids?

Poms are affectionate but fragile, so they do best with older, gentle children who understand how to handle a tiny dog.
